A Windham Hill Retrospective by Mark Isham is a stunning tribute to the iconic record label that revolutionized the world of New Age music. The album features 14 tracks that showcase Isham's remarkable musicianship and his deep appreciation for the Windham Hill sound.

From the delicate piano melodies of "In a Silent Way" to the sweeping orchestration of "On the Threshold of Liberty," Isham's compositions capture the essence of the label's signature style. There is a sense of tranquility and introspection that permeates the entire album, making it perfect for relaxation, meditation, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home.

One of the standout tracks is "The Impressionist Suite," which features Isham's haunting trumpet playing over a lush, cinematic backdrop. The song is a testament to Isham's versatility as a musician, and his ability to blend different genres and styles into a cohesive whole.

A Windham Hill Retrospective is a decent enough sampler of Mark Isham's Windham Hill records, in particular Vapor Drawings, Film Music, Songs My Children Taught Me, and Tibet. The dozen tracks here are certainly quite good in their own right but newcomers would be better served by picking up the aforementioned titles first before even considering purchasing this collection. Same thing holds true for Pure Mark Isham, another similar compilation album that shares exactly half the tracks found here. This retrospective would have received a higher rating if it had included two of my favorite Isham compositions, "Pittsburgh 1901 (Theme from Mrs. Soffel)" and "When Things Dream." Isham's such a talented composer and trumpet player but this overview just isn't comprehensive enough. Still, if you should find A Windham Hill Retrospective in a bargain bin at a nearby music store or at your local Goodwill, it's worth a listen.
