Review by Dražen Pavlović

The Fess The Professor Longhair Anthology album is a masterpiece of New Orleans piano music. Professor Longhair, also known as Fess, was a legendary pianist, singer, and songwriter who influenced many musicians who followed in his footsteps. The album features 50 tracks that span his career from the 1940s to the 1980s, showcasing his unique blend of blues, R&B, and boogie-woogie.

The album opens with the classic "Mardi Gras in New Orleans," a rollicking tune that captures the spirit of the city's most famous celebration. Other highlights include "Tipitina," "Big Chief," and "Bald Head," all of which showcase Fess's distinctive voice and piano playing. The album also includes some lesser-known tracks, such as "In the Night" and "Walk Your Blues Away," which are equally impressive.

One of the most impressive things about this anthology is how it showcases Fess's evolution as an artist. The early tracks are more raw and bluesy, while the later tracks are more polished and sophisticated. However, Fess's signature style is present throughout, and his influence on New Orleans music is undeniable.
